See reviews and pricing for the 2010 vintage. Barolo is often described as having the aromas of tar and roses, and the wines are noted for their ability to age. This wine has 127 mentions of earthy notes (leather, tar, earthy). ![]() They usually take on a rust red tinge as they mature. Barolo must be aged for at least 38 months after the harvest before release, of which at least 18 months must be in wood. When subjected to aging of at least five years before release, the wine can be labeled Riserva. Since it was first produced as a single vineyard Barolo Riserva in 1995, fewer than 15 vintages have been bottled, a strong hint at the stringent criteria enforced by the Grasso family in producing the Rncot. In the past, Barolos tended to be high in tannin, taking 10 years or more to soften and become ready for drinking. The Rncot Barolo Riserva is Grasso’s top Barolo and the crme de la crme of the region, made only in the best vintages. Congratulations.The entrenched views of both the ‘modernists’ and ‘traditionalists’ have moderated over time, with the result that today the overall quality of Barolo is undoubtedly the best it has ever been.īeginning in the 1970s and 1980s, a new generation of winemakers have developed a ‘modern’ style of Barolo based on improved viticulture and grape quality, less extractive winemaking and new approaches to oak maturation. This is a crowning achievement for the hard-working and passionate Grasso family, led by father Elio and son Gianluca. This wine tells a story from nose to finish, like a flashing film reel. The resulting Riserva Runcot has a stunning bouquet that is all violets and prunes, followed by a classic palate of minerals, herbs, cinnamon and delicate wafts of white truffle. The wine goes through 45 days of extended maceration post-fermentation and then a solid seven years of aging between oak and bottle. ![]() There is more vibrancy here and a true sense of energy brimming right there under the surface. This vintage saw a relatively long growing season, and it offers greater fruit density, structure and acidity than the last edition that was made, the 2010. (The 2013 vintage will be released commercially in February of 2020, and this is the wine's first official review.) Gianluca Grasso holds the precious bottle I tasted from as if it were a newborn child. If any Italian wine from this decade can undeniably be called a reserve, it is the 2013 Barolo Riserva Runcot.
